Whether you dabble in social media or it’s part of your ongoing content marketing strategy, getting more Twitter followers is a great way to help grow your authority and reach. But where do you start? Use these 8 tips for getting more followers on Twitter and you’ll be on the right path.
#1: Be Real
Before you start pushing for new Twitter followers, review your profile and make sure it’s representative of your brand. Do you have a profile and background picture? Have you completed your bio? Many people will make a snap decision on whether or not they should follow you just by looking at those two things.

#2: Be Interesting
Whether they found your page via a retweet of your content, via another Twitter follower, or organically, potential followers will likely glance at the type of content you share to determine if you’re interesting enough to follow. Social media, particularly a platform like Twitter, requires ongoing attention. You can’t post once a day and forget it. Most social media professionals agree that the best times to post on Twitter are between 12:00 and 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Also keep in mind that Twitter is most used by people during down times like lunch breaks and commutes.
An editorial calendar is a great way to keep track of what you share and when. Notorious commercial real estate blogger Duke Long’s Twitter account is a great example of how to post regularly and at the right times.
#4: Be Short
Retweets of your Twitter posts are a great way to get noticed by potential new followers; so, you need to make it easy for others to retweet you. Keep your tweets short enough that they leave room for the “RT” symbol and the follower’s username. A good rule of thumb is to leave about 15-18 characters. So … 140 characters - 18 characters = about 122 characters per post.

#5: Be Courteous
Remember that social media isn’t all about YOU … be courteous. When someone new follows you, follow them back. (Of course, if they’re not a robot and have something interesting to share.) The more you engage with others, the more they will reciprocate - and that’s how more potential followers will find you.

A good best-practice is to review your most engaging tweets (the ones that got the most retweets, likes or comments) and repost them at varying times during the day/week. This ensures that you’re maximizing the opportunity for your best, most engaging content to be seen by others.

#7: Be Strategic
Another important strategy when trying to gain Twitter followers is to strategically find and follow Twitter accounts of people/companies you think would enjoy your content. In essence, follow accounts you want to follow you. How? You can use Twitter’s Advanced Search function to search by hashtag (#CRE, #RealEstate, #Nashville, #CRETech, etc.) or keyword (real estate, commercial real estate, office space, etc.) to find people that are interested in a certain topic. You can also upload your email contacts to strategically find and follow your existing sphere.
#8: Be Visible
Lastly, be visible. Make sure you’re promoting your Twitter page on your website or blog, in your email signature, and anywhere else you feel it’s appropriate. This will let everyone that comes in contact with you or your brand know that they can follow you on Twitter.
