How to Use Twitter Lists to Grow Your Following

Twitter followers don’t just fall out of the sky —you’ve got to work to earn that connection. We’ve talked about several ways to grow your following on Twitter in the past, but today we want to dive into using Twitter lists.

First of all, what is a Twitter list? It’s basically a curated list of Twitter users. You can curate your own, or you can follow a list that has been created by someone else. You might create a list of your clients, follow a list of top real estate bloggers, or find lists to follow based on common interests —the options are seemingly endless.

A Twitter list can also be public or private. If public, anyone can see and follow it. You can also click on a list and see all of the recent tweets from that group of people —something that can be very valuable.

To create a Twitter list, simply log into your Twitter account, go to your profile, and click on the “List” button.

From there you’ll be able to see the Twitter lists you’re subscribed to, as well as the ones that you’re a member of —meaning public lists that someone has added you to.

If you want to create a new list, use the prompt to the right of the screen. Simply name the list, decide if you want it to be public or private, and start adding.

How Does This Help Build a Following?

Growing your following is nearly impossible if you’re not following the right people. Searches for “real estate blogs” or “CRE Tech” can work, but finding a great Twitter list of curated accounts can be like hitting the jackpot. Remember, follow and be followed —when you follow the right accounts, you’re likely to gain their follow, as well.

So how do you find these lists and start following the right people?

#1. The Easy Way

The easiest way to find great lists to follow is to find influencers or potential clients that you like and then see what lists they’re a member of. To do so, go to their profile and click on “Lists” —you’ll see what lists they’re a member of so you can follow those that make sense for you.

#2. The More Complicated Way

To find specific lists, you’re going to have to turn to Google. Let’s say you want to search groups on “CRE Tech” —type the following into Google:

site:twitter.com inurl:lists <TYPE THE KEYWORD HERE>

You’ll need to go through these search results one-by-one to see if they’re lists you’re interested in following —but this is the most comprehensive way to find lists that meet your specific criteria.
