A world without emojis is a world we don’t want to be a part of. They are a fun shortcut to expressing an idea or emotion and have become an extension of human communication around the world. It’s understandable--these cute little characters really know how to drive a message home. From emails to your co-workers to company tweets, the possibilities are endless! Here are some tips for staying professional while using emojis in your CRE marketing campaign.

Use Emojis With Meaning

Using emojis is fun. It’s so much fun that companies sometimes go crazy with it. One of the most significant slips anyone can make on social media these days is overusing an emoji. Or worse--misusing an emoji. Our suggestion is to do a little research before you start replacing every punctuation mark with the “Winking Face” or eggplant emoji (Okay, that might be a stretch. The point is you can never be too careful!). You want to position your company as a group of competent and qualified agents, but you put your company’s reputation at risk by posting an emoji doesn’t mean what you think it means.

Carefully select your emojis, making sure you understand the definition. A great resource every emoji-using human should check out, especially those managing business or professional social media accounts, is Emojipedia.org. Just type in the emoji, and it will give you the meaning. It’s that simple. So even if you think you know what you’re posting, it’s always a good idea to double check. It could save your 🍑.

Avoid Cryptic Messages

The emoji has transcended cultural barriers and shifted the way we communicate. However, you shouldn’t assume all your clients are equally versed in the language. The worst thing you can do is leave your audience scratching their heads at a puzzling slew of emojis, wondering what in the world you are trying to say. You're not clever if nobody gets it, and social media only works if you’re able to communicate a message. Nobody’s going to take the time to crack the code--your followers will just keep on scrolling.

Emojis should enhance the message, not deliver it. To reach the fullest range of audience members, stick with shorter messages or equal parts text and emoji pairings. As a general rule of thumb, you don’t want to use more than four emojis at a time. And if it doesn't make sense, please don’t force it.

There’s Always a Time and a Place

Consider using emojis like using slang--there are times when it’s cool to use, and others when it’s wildly inappropriate. Always keep the situation in mind. You could have fun and use them in an Instagram story or seasonal post. However, they should never pop up in a listing, or to describe an agent's’ expertise on the company’s  “About Us” page.

However your company decides to use emojis in their social media marketing, the key takeaway is always to be clear, considerate, and consistent.
