On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me – ELEVEN ways to be more productive!
With the new year comes plenty of resolutions around the success of your commercial real estate business. And many of those resolutions require extra time and energy to come to fruition.
I know what you’re thinking. “I don’t HAVE any extra time!” This is where the need for some serious productivity comes into play. And our crew of elves at The Content Funnel are here to save the day with their Santa’s workshop worthy productivity tips!
#1. Organize your to-do list.
This may sound silly, but actually sitting down and organizing your to-do list, with the most important items first, can help it seem less daunting and make your more productive in completing it. You can even call out those items that must be completed today and schedule your other outstanding items for later in the week.
#2. Eliminate those things that don’t matter.
It’s called the 80/20 rule and it might just make your life a whole lot easier! Only 20 percent of your work produces 80 percent of your results. Focus on those areas of your business that fall into the 80 percent and eliminate the rest. Your business will likely not suffer at all with the change.
#3. Take a break!
This might just be our favorite productivity tip. With continued focus your brain becomes tired over time. A quick 5-minute refresh to step outside, make a cup of hot cocoa or just grab a Christmas cookie may actually save you time by rejuvenating your mind and helping you work smarter and harder.
#4. Start with that dreaded task.
It’s easy to keep pushing off that particularly difficult, stressful or time-consuming activity until tomorrow…and then tomorrow… and tomorrow. It’s never ending. Tackle the difficult things first thing in the morning when you’re at your best, and reduce the stress that comes with knowing it’s still on your to-do list.
#5. Focus on one thing at a time.
We all love to multitask. It may make us feel more productive but it’s actually slowing us down. By focusing on one thing at a time, you’ll perform those tasks better and more quickly.
#6. Designate time for the mundane tasks.
Checking email or voicemail, or interacting with your audience on Facebook may make you feel like you’re accomplishing quite a lot, but constantly interrupting the hard work with these everyday tasks may keep you from completing everything on your to-do list or subject you to constant interruptions. Instead, set aside specific blocks of time for responding to emails and phone calls.
#7. Create an environment for productivity.
If you work from home, it may be difficult to slip into your productive “beast mode” when you’re sitting in front of daily talk shows or relaxing in a coffee shop. Set up a quiet, distraction-free office in your home and make it very clear to your family that you should only be interrupted if one of the kids has set the Christmas tree on fire or is drowning the family cat in eggnog.
#8. Time block your calendar.
Before you stop working in the evening every day, sit down and block out the following day. This forces you to figure out how long each task will take you and give those tasks a designated time to be completed. It will force you to stick to a schedule and complete those required items on your to-do list.
#9. Factor in rewards for yourself.
If you love naps, tell yourself that if you complete all your morning tasks 15 minutes early then you will have time for a 45-minute nap in the afternoon. Maybe you love a good holiday beverage from Starbucks. Make a pact to yourself that if you’re done with all your items at 3pm with 20 minutes to spare, you’ll treat yourself to a peppermint latte.
#10. Don’t forget about nutrition and exercise.
While it seems like we’ve tried this before, man cannot live on coffee alone. Make sure you get a balanced breakfast and wake up a little early for a nice walk or your favorite yoga class. Getting the blood flowing early in the morning will improve your brain function and keep you focused longer.
#11. If all else fails, delegate.
Sometimes no matter how well you plan, there’s just too much to do! Don’t be afraid to delegate some tasks to other people on your team that are experts in those areas. Or work with the team at The Content Funnel to handle your time-consuming blogging and social media tasks!
